The hybrid boat Greenline is developed through the collaboration between J&J Design, Seaway´s Research & Development department and German corporation Volkswagen Marine. This innovation is a big step in the development of the nautical industry. With the making of a hybrid boat, Seaway and VW Marine wish to make nautics cheaper (financially more accesible), and the boating experience a more comfortable one and friendlier to the environment. With this innovation, Seaway and VW Marine hope that they will make the nautics interesting to the wider public and that more people will be making decisions in purchasing and utlising vessels. Greenline Hybrid Boat will, in return, be financially more appealing to the buyer and closer to the concept of the ´home comfort´. The highlight of the Greenline Hybrid Boat is the attention put into environmentally friendly design as with the use of hyvrid technology there is a clear reduction in fossil fuels use, and therefore, lower emissions of smog into the air. This vessel is environmentally friendly and it does not create wake during mooring and boating in the marina, which means it accommodates the well-being all the nautical enthusiasts.
Greenline 33 measures 10m in length, with alternating use between diesel and electric motors – classified as parallel hybrid. When the elctrical motor is not in use, the diesel motor takes over and is capable of generating electrical charge up to 5kW. This enables the use of all other equipment on the boat which charge at 220 V at all times. The whole of the roof is made up of solar cells which generate 2kW of electrical energy. High capacity battery allows for up to 20 nautical miles solely in electrical drive mode. Greenline 33 excells in its uniwue, patented body design, which is conceptualised to efficiently use of energy.
The heart of Greenline 33’s superior performance is the new Superdisplacement hull (patent pending), which consumes less fuel, emits less CO2 and produces less wake than any comparable displacement or planing hulls. Further advantage of this hull shape is a very soft and stable ride in all conditions – an important factor in comfort and safety underway (incomparably better than any planing hull).
Twin protective fixed keels at the aft part of the underbody provide excellent directional stability, especially with following seas. At the same time they provide the roll stabilizing effect and additionally protect the propeller and drive during accidental grounding. The keels are sacrificial: if getting damaged during repeated hard groundings they are easily and inexpensively replaced without hampering the structure of the boat. The keels also enable the boat to be set aground without damage to the hull or the drive train. Propeller is further protected by a stainless steel protection preventing ropes, chains or debris to foul the propeller.
The VW Marine TDI 75-4 diesel engine gives a top speed of over 10 knots and a range of 700 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 7 knots (fuel capacity 400 l, 10% reserve). Beside being very quiet, vibration free and reliable, this is probably the most popular and the cleanest modern diesel engine available today.
