The true appeal of this new 50-foot sailboat lies in way three key design elements are interwoven. These elements are light, volume and comfort. Two years of research and development by Jeanneau Design and the naval architects Philippe Briand and Vittorio Garroni have yielded a fully-equipped boat designed with the owner in mind and built for offshore passages. From the exterior, it is clear that she belongs to Jeanneau’s successful line of “Deck Saloon” cruisers. A design pioneered by the popular Sun Odyssey 54DS. The Sun Odyssey 54DS has become the reference in her class with over 300 built to date. The Sun Odyssey 50DS builds on this award-wining formula with contemporary styling and a seaworthy construction that appeals to a sailor looking for comfort, but who refuses to sacrifice style or performance.
The Sun Odyssey 50DS starts with a simple concept; create more light in order to bring a feeling and openness to the interior spaces. In order to achieve this goal large ports are integrated into the coachroof, as well as, elongated hull ports provide a view of the sea and additional light. A key innovation of this model is the ability of the owner to choose to have his owner’s suite forward or aft. Light, volume and comfort are ensured regardless of his preference.
In terms of equipment, the Sun Odyssey 50DS benefits from a high level of standard equipment that are often options at other boat-builders. To cite just a few examples, the Sun Odyssey 50DS comes with a standard in-mast furling system for the mainsail, a large Harken traveller on the coachroof, a substantial double anchor roller in stainless steel along with a powerful windlass, a deep sail locker forward, a dedicated compartment for the liferaft (that can be launched without leaving the cockpit) and, as one would expect from a Jeanneau of this size, dedicated spaces for optional equipment from generators to air conditioning and from washing machines to televisions. A true owner’s yacht.

Sun Odyssey Deck Saloon «Performance» 50 ds
Who says cruising should be slow?
Building on the success of the Sun Odyssey Performance range, Jeanneau has decided to develop the same concept for its Deck Saloon range allowing even greater speed, tuning and enjoyment to the world’s most complete range of Deck Saloon yachts. Built on the powerful hulls of the successful Sun Odyssey line, the taller mast and additional equipment in the Performance version gives its owner the advantage :
- Tri-radial cut sails made from a sandwich of Mylar and taffeta fabrics provide form stability and protection against UV and abrasion.
- Precise tuning and control of the rigging and sails are the keys to Performance sailing. In order to achieve this precision, Dyneema running rigging, Dyform standing rigging, adjustable genoa cars and adjustable backstay are all standard on the Performance version.
- Below the waterline, a profiled Performance keel and a feathering prop.
