UK Sailmakers France's Alain Janet won the 2016 Pittman Innovation award from Sail Magazine for his PowerSails creation that allows thin film solar panels to be attached or laminated into sails. These panels are bendable allowing the bimini to be stowed normally. His latest invention is a solar panel that can attach to a bimini with velcro.
The panels can also be laminated into new sails, which is what Conrad Colman is using on his IMOCA 60 in the Vendee Globe race. Enough panels have been laminated into his UK Titanium mainsail to produce 2.2 kilowatts per hour.
