U.K. marine electronics manufacturer Digital Yacht won the 2011 DAME award at METS in the electronics category for its iAIS application, which links a boats navigation data to the Apple iPhone, iPad or iTouch.
“I’m delighted to accept the DAME award for best marine electronics. The standard among the competition is high, so this is a great achievement,” said Digital Yacht CEO Nick Heyes in a press release. “It’s the icing on the cake for us after recently picking up the NMEA Technology award only a few weeks ago. The DAME award will help cement Digital Yacht’s future as a forward thinking manufacturer that is here to say.”
The iAIS Automatic Identification System wirelessly syncs with Apple devices and compatible PC and Android platforms without needing a connection to the Internet. The iAIS receiver allows the compatible apps to access the NMEA instrumentation directly on the iPad, iPhone, or iTouch.
iAIS also multiplexes any other NMEA data that is available on board the boat - for instance GPS, depth, speed and wind etc. All of this data is combined with the AIS data into a single wireless feed, that becomes available on any compatible application. By using the boat’s own GPS, even an iTouch or iPad that does not have an internal GPS can now be used for navigation and superior performance will also be seen on an iPhone, which some users have complained suffers from jitter or poor lock-on with its internal GPS.
As well as sending data wirelessly, the iAIS also has an NMEA0183 and USB interface so that you can output data to a PC (via USB) and a dedicated plotter (via NMEA) for larger installations.
