Nauteek tactical electronics
Technical details
Producer: Nauteek (FR)

NAUTEEK, the French new electronics manufacturer for sailing announces the availability of its new product : the NAUTEEK SC100.
Three months after the commercial launch of its first tactical SC200 product dedicated for serious racers, NAUTEEK, whose purpose is to reply with pertinent products to the needs of people sailing on dinghies, cats, sport boats up to 24 feet, extends its product range with the new SC100.
Designed for sport and leisure, the SC100 keeps the mechanical characteristics of the SC200: waterproof, extra light, tiny and floating case.
Autonomous, with 30 hours working time on an integrated Li-ion battery, with no wiring required, the SC100 is easy to use, thanks to its scrolling menus and large graphical icons.
The huge 40mm max digit height enables to deliver useful navigational information on speed, race timer and course to help the sailor keep the boat on its best performances.
Remember that the SC200 provides in addition of that VMG, True Upwind Direction variation, Velocity To a buoy set as waypoint to boat, distance to the start line and other more tactical features...
Fully visible even with polarized sunglasses, the screen can be illuminated with a backlight for evening sailing session.
With a storage capacity from 14 hours up to 140 hours of recorded GPS tracks, according to the record interval chosen, the SC provides a perfect tool for race analysis, once the tracks have been downloaded on a PC and interfaced with free software.
A new firmware is also available for the SC200 that includes a new speed damping and the optimization of the storage capacity . All devices can be upgraded for free by downloading it from NAUTEEK´s web site. Hence you will be able to enjoy future functionalities and your investment will be protected.
This first upgrade will be followed by a more important before February 2008.
Free for all SC100 and SC200 devices, this next upgrade will allow to store in the device up to 750 waypoints and 150 routes, and to display on large digits the bearing, the bearing deviation, the distance to the next waypoint...
Recommended retail price of the SC200 is 550 Euros (vat included). Concerning the SC100, its recommanded price is 400 Euros (vat included).

How to use the VMG?
As shown on the following sketch, the actual speed of the boat can be broken up into two perpendicular components: useful speed (your VMG) and wasted speed that does not help the boat to get upwind. In this case VMG represents how fast the boat is getting upwind.
Optimizing VMG is far more important than just going fast. For example, if you sail perpendicular to the wind, you will go really fast but you won´t get any closer to the windward mark and your VMG will be zero. On the other hand, if you point straight upwind you will not go anywhere, your speed will be zero so your VMG will again be zero.
Somewhere in between head-to-wind and a beam reach lies the correct angle that will optimize your upwind speed and make you get to the buoy faster. The calculation made by the SC200 of your VMG is based on your speed over the ground. Then your SC200 uses trigonometry to extract the component of your actual speed that is aligned with the reference wind direction that you have set. In any case, sailing upwind or downwind, using the VMG will help you to get the best balance between course and speed. Highest is the VMG, and better your are sailing!
It is necessary to follow the variation of your speed to interpret the VMG information correctly. If your speed is decreasing, your VMG value will also decrease. The variation of the current will also have an influence on your speed and on the VMG. Keep in mind to consider both effects.
