Friction Reduction was the Key. According to Mercury, the tremendous gains in fuel efficency were obtained primarily by “friction reduction.” That, plus an enlarged air intake came and a recalibrated PCM resulted in this huge fuel savings, says Mercury. The five basic engineering changes are—Forged Pistons. Forged pistons have increased heat tolerance and durability over conventional pistons which allowed the “pistons cooling jets” jets to be eliminated and thus reduce the amount of oil needing in the block which “sloshes” around robbing power.
Precision Machined Oil Dams in the Crankcase. By greatly reducing the clearance between the crankshaft and the “oil scrapers”, the amount of oil mass that the crankshaft had to push through and swirl around was also reduced, thus releasing more usable horsepower.
Aggressive Intake Cam Profile. The air intake cams were increased 1 mm on the high side of the lift for 10% more duration. This allows more oxygen into the cylinder for greater combustion which the new forged pistons could tolerate.
Eccentric Grooved Crankshaft Main Bearings. This slight change, too, reduced the amount of oil “sloshing” around in the crankcase – and thus robbing power -- according to Mercury.
Enhanced Propulsion Control Module (PCM) Calibration. Because the engine is now producing “too much” horsepower the engine’s electronic brain needed to be reprogrammed to “back down” the horsepower, which resulted in less fuel needing to be injected.
As a result of these changes, the Verado engines could now meet emissions standards all over the world with one version, said a Mercury spokesman. That was certainly a fortuitous consequence.
Minimal Price Increase, New Look. Mercury says the improvements to the Verado will not significantly impact pricing. For instance, the previous version of the Verado 250 (XL shaft) retails for $17,575, while the new version of the same models comes in at $17,795. To differentiate the new models from the old, all Mk II Verados will feature a new chrome-polished graphics package. The new four- and six-cylinder Verados will be available late summer at authorized Mercury Verado dealers, says the company.
