Although ‘glow in the dark’ has been around for some time, the latest innovative technology has brought Glowfast straight to the yachting community. With the Glowfast ‘luminous draft stripes’ for sails, for the first time, yachtsmen will be able to see their entire sail shape throughout the night without the aid of a torch.
Using patented technology, this revolutionary product can provide more than 20 hours of visibility with its luminous properties, with as little as 10 minutes of exposure to light. The stripes then recharge during their next exposure to either natural or torchlight. They are made using similar base materials to current sail tapes and as such are lightweight, durable and easy to fit to either new sails or retrofitted to cleaned older sails. The stripes will stick to most fabrics, whether fore and aft or downwind sails.
A number of round the world race boats and successful offshore campaigns have already used the luminous stripes to great effect with claims that overnight performance can increase by as much as 20%, through improved sail trim and boat handling during the hours of darkness. Another product in the range, which is designed to improve boat handling at night, is the Glowfast luminous rope clutch sheet of labels.
