A lot of people have tried to combine the convenience of a jib furling system with the advantages of optimum performance. Which is why installing a jib furling system below deck is not a new idea. It gives a greater sail area and a less cluttered deck. The drawback, up to now, is that the holes it required in the deck were too big. And sailing in heavy seas with a flooded anchor well doesn’t exactly make for speed. Nor is it very advisable.
The Furlex TD is the latest version of Seldén’s famous Furlex. The TD stands for Through Deck. The system has been designed to provide a virtually watertight, through-deck installation. The small amount of water that may seep through is easily dealt with by normal drainage.
A universal joint above the deck gives full freedom of movement to the forestay. The line drum is located below the deck. The line is either led up to the deck or run aft to the cockpit via a tube. Like all other Furlex systems, the TD comes with a so-called free-tack function for the tack hook and a load distributor in the halyard swivel.
The system must be installed through a stable foredeck. The maximum permitted deck thickness is 10 mm. The Furlex 200TD and 300TD will be available in spring 2006. Deliveries of the Furlex 400TD will commence autumn 2006.
