Do you make propane safety the #1 priority for your crew when cooking in the galley? Do all hands know the correct procedures to turn on and shut down propane fuel to prevent an explosion? Propane fuel requires extra care.
Quick-tips for safety:
• You must store your propane fuel tank in an outside top loading, airtight locker.
• Through bolt the tank and regulator restraining straps. They must hold in the worst sailing weather.
• Keep vents clear of debris so that explosive propane fuel vapors escape overboard.
• Never leave a galley unattended. It takes less than 30 seconds for a galley fire to get out of control.
• Mount a fully charged fire extinguisher across from the stove on the opposite side of the cabin.
Test the system once a month
• Every month, inspect all fittings for leaks, cracks, and corrosion. First, turn off all appliances on the propane stove.
• Open the propane valve at the main tank. This creates pressure within the system.
• Make a mild solution of water and liquid soap. Brush the mixture onto propane fuel lines, tank and valves. Bubbles indicate leaks; repair these before using the stove.
Steps to Light the Marine Propane Stove
1. Check that the main tank valve and stove burners are off.
2. Ventilate the galley area for 5-6 minutes. Open all hatches, vents, opening ports and doors. Run mechanical blowers.
3. Crack open the main tank valve about ¼ turn.
4. Turn on the solenoid switch at the galley station to allow fuel to flow from the main tank. Light the stove or use the electronic ignition. Keep the flame visible at all times.
Steps to Shut Down the Marine Propane Stove
1. Shut off the propane oven. Keep one stove burner going with a medium flame. Shut off all other burners.
2. Secure the solenoid switch and wait until the flame dies out at the burner.
3. Turn off stove burner valve. Double check that all other burners and oven are off.
4. Turn off main tank valve.
