VETUS Service Tips

The sailing season is now more than halfway through and although this summer has not been the best, many people have managed to make good use of their boats. Over the coming months we will share with you some tips, tricks and experiences about how to use and maintain your VETUS product(s) in the best possible way. We have made an overview of the most essential systems on board and hope these tips will help you to enjoy your VETUS products for a long time.

Your VETUS engine:
• Check the levels of engine oil, coolant and gearbox oil on a regular basis. If need be, top up using the correct oil or coolant available from your dealer.
• Try to put maximum load on your engine on a regular basis. This helps to prevent glazing of the cylinder bores and a build-up of carbon in the cylinder head.
• Check the exhaust outlet regularly to ensure that raw water is being pumped through the engine.
• Take great care that you refuel from a reputable source. Old, dirty or water contaminated fuel can cause serious problems or even engine failure at a critical moment.
• Plan to have the engine serviced at the recommended intervals and ensure that all the service tasks are carried out.

Waste water system:
• Empty and flush the holding tank with clean water on a regular basis.
• Check the tightness of all hose connections.
• Ensure that outlet hoses run downhill towards the holding tank or seacock. These should have no dips or bends where waste water can be trapped and create a smell.
• Flush the outlet hoses through on a regular basis with clean water. This also helps to avoid unpleasant odours.

Bow thruster:
• Check the tightness of all electrical connections, particularly the heavy duty battery cables. Because of temperature changes and vibration, these connections can become loose.
• Never use the bow thruster for longer than a few minutes continuously. The motor needs time to dissipate the heat it generates.
• Never use the bow thruster as a means of propulsion.
• Check that the thruster is in a dry and well ventilated space and that the supply of cooling air is not blocked by items stored around it.
• Please take great care when operating the thruster in the vicinity of swimmers and smaller boats.
We wish you good sailing.
